Ligustrum (Privet)

Ligustrum japonicum (Japanese Privet)

A small, compact evergreen tree that is ideal for garden screening, as it is quick growing and robust, whilst being amenable to occasional pruning. Clusters of white flowers are borne in late Summer, followed by waxy dark purple / black fruit, with glossy green leaves that will remain on the tree in all but the harshest of Winters. Suitable for most soil types, although will not thrive in water-logged ground.

Ultimate height  5m (16ft),  Spread   3m (10ft).

Ligustrum lucidum Excelsium Superbum (Variegated Chinese Privet)

A small evergreen tree with glossy ovate leaves, splashed with light green, and bordered by yellow margins. In very cold winters it can lose some of its leaf cover, it will however re-grow in the spring. Clusters of cream coloured flowers are borne on late summer, followed by black fruits in Autumn. Suitable for most soil types, although will not thrive in water-logged ground. Sold as a top-worked standard, with a 1.5m clear stem.

Ultimate height  5m (16ft),  Spread   4m (13ft).

Ligustrum ovalifolium (Oval-leafed Privet, Hedging Privet)

A tough evergreen tree that is most commonly used as a hedging plant. Fast growing with ovate glossy green leaves, it will retain its foliage in all but the harshest of Winters. Fluffy white flowers are produced in late Summer, followed by shiny black berries in the Autumn. An extremely resilient plant which will grow back even after severe pruning, and will thrive in most positions and soil types.

Ultimate height 4m (12ft)
