Juglans

Juglans are a genus of over 20 species, from America, southern Europe and South east Asia. Generally large trees producing edible nuts, suited to most soils but best where they will not be affected by late frosts in the UK.

Juglans nigra (Black Walnut)

Large fast growing tree, with deeply furrowed bark, large fruit generally in pairs. Wood is very hard, used for furniture and gun stocks.

Ultimate height  20m  (68ft),  spread 15m  (47ft).

Juglans regia (Common Walnut)

A slow growing medium sized tree, with a rounded head. Timber is very valuable, nuts not as large as on Nigra.

Ultimate height  15m  (48ft),  spread 14m  (44ft).
