Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsura)
Native of China and Japan, a medium growing tree in the UK. A rounded crown of heart shaped leaves, which when emerging in spring are flushed pinkish-bronze, turning green in the summer. In autumn it has brilliant displays of orange yellow and red, When the leaves fall they give of a smell of burnt sugar, which carries in the breeze. The flowers and fruit are insignificant. Grows best on deep loamy soils, with best autumn colour on acid soils.
Ultimate height 12m (39ft), spread 11m (36ft).

A graceful weeping form of the above tree, with the same characteristics.
Ultimate height 9m (29ft), spread 5m (16ft).
