Liriodendron

Liriodendron chinense (Chinese Tulip Tree)

A medium-sized tree hailing from central China, smaller in stature than its American cousin L. tulipifera, with larger leaves and a rounder crown. Its distinctive deep green leaves have 4 rounded lobes and a blue-green underside; these emerge in Spring and are followed (in older specimens) by greenish white tulip shaped flowers with a yellow centre.  In Autumn the leaves turn a beautiful yellow before falling, leaving an open and majestic Winter silhouette. This tree will perform well on most fertile soil types, but prefers slightly acidic conditions.

Ultimate height  15m (49ft),  Spread  12m (40ft).

Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip Tree)

A large and relatively fast growing tree, with a light grey bark and a broad oval habit in maturity. Large distinctive 4-lobed deep green leaves with a light green underside emerge in Spring, followed (in older specimens) by greenish white tulip shaped flowers, centred with a flash of yellow and orange. In Autumn the leaves turn a remarkable yellow before falling, leaving an open and majestic Winter silhouette. This tree will perform well on most fertile soil types, and is reasonably tolerant of windy sites.

Ultimate height  18m (60ft),  Spread  12m (40ft).
