Nyssa sinensis (Chinese Tupelo)
A rare large shrub or small deciduous tree of spreading habit. Large, narrowly ovate leaves emerge as a bronze colour in Spring, before changing to dark green as they age through the Summer, ending the year startling shades of yellow, orange and red before falling. Fully hardy in the UK, but appreciating shelter from cold Winter winds, the Chinese Tupelo will grow well in fertile soil but requires slightly acidic conditions to produce its most stunning Autumn display.
Ultimate height 8m (26ft), Spread 6m (20ft).
Nyssa sylvatica (Tupelo)
A small to medium-sized deciduous tree, broadly columnar in shape. The narrowly oval, dark glossy green leaves turn vivid shades of yellow, orange and red before falling, making it an excellent choice for Autumn colour. Although hardy, the Tupelo prefers shelter from cold Winter winds; it will survive in most soil conditions, but the best Autumn colour will be seen on trees planted in slightly acidic situations.
Ultimate height 15m (50ft), Spread 8m (26ft).
