Pittosporum tenuifolium
A compact evergreen shrub, often used for architectural shape in the garden. Small shining green leaves with wavy margins are densely packed on thin twiggy branches, accompanied in late Spring with clusters of dark purple, honey-scented flowers. These understated flowers are very attractive to garden pollinators, and the rounded black fruits that follow are much appreciated by small garden birds. Pittosporum are hardy in most areas of the UK, but may struggle in colder areas that freeze regularly during the Winter. Moist but well-drained situations will suit best.
Ultimate height 3m (10ft), Spread 2m (6ft).
Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Garnettii’
A compact evergreen shrub, often used for architectural shape in the garden. Small grey-green leaves, edged with silver and delicately spotted with pink, are held on dark twiggy branches; accompanied in Spring with tiny chocolate-purple, honey-scented flowers. Pittosporum can be clipped in late Spring to retain their shape, but otherwise require little attention. A sunny, sheltered site on free draining soil will suit best as ‘Granettii’ is slightly tender and may struggle in colder locations.
Ultimate height 3m (10ft), Spread 2m (6ft).
Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Queen’
A compact evergreen shrub, often used for architectural shape in the garden. ‘Silver Queen’ is a variegated Pittosporum, with grey-green leaves that have a pretty white edging. In the Springtime small bell-shaped purple flowers appear in clusters; these are largely insignificant but do produce scent that attracts pollinators to the garden. Rounded black fruits follow in the late Summer, providing valuable food for wildlife. ‘Silver Queen’ can be clipped to retain its shape, but otherwise requires little attention. A sunny, sheltered site on free draining soil will suit best as these plants are slightly tender and may struggle in colder locations.
Ultimate height 3m (10ft), Spread 2m (6ft).
