Castanea (Sweet Chestnut)

Castanea sativa

A large growing tree, introduced by the Romans for the nuts, grows well on most moisture retentive soils. Produces the typical Sweet Chestnuts in the Autumn, normally when over 15yrs old.

Ultimate height  25m  (82ft),  spread  20m  (65ft).

Castanea sativa Marron de Lyon

Marron de Lyon is a reliable French variety that can start producing nuts from an early age (2 – 3 years).Compact in habit, if you plan to control the size of your tree, prune each Autumn / Winter to maintain a height of around 12ft or so.

Ultimate height  5m  (19ft),  spread  4m  (13ft).
