Zelkova serrata (Japanese Zelkova)
A medium-sized tree with a graceful widespread habit. Vigorous when young, but slowing with age, a mature Japanese Zelkova is characterised by its short, wide trunk which splits into multiple upright stems that form a prominent, round-topped canopy. The grey bark flakes in flat sheets to reveal an orangey brown under-bark; young twigs are green and hairy, later becoming smooth and reddish-brown. The elongated oval leaves are serrated and emerge a dark green in Spring, turning to a stunning display of bronze red, orange and yellow in Autumn. While this tree does enjoy full sunlight, it can thrive in partial shade; the soil should be moist and well drained.
Ultimate height 15m (50ft), Spread 12m (40ft).
