Parrotia persica (Persian Ironwood)
One of the finest small trees for Autumn colour. Glossy, deeply ribbed mid-green foliage becomes a stunning show of crimson purple reds and golds as Summer turns to Autumn; and as it holds its leaves for a long time, the Autumn display is often extended for several weeks. Tiny clusters of witch hazel-like ruby-red flowers on bare, grey-barked branches appear in February-March, making the Persian Ironwood a good bet for year round interest. It is tolerant of almost any conditions, but will give its finest Autumn display in slightly acidic situations, and preferably sheltered from late Winter frosts.
Ultimate height 8m (26ft), Spread 8m (26ft).
Parrotia persica ‘Vanessa’
A small ornamental tree, with a more upright stature than the regular Persian Ironwood. The young leaves are flushed with red, before maturing to a glossy mid green over the summer, and ending the year with a spectacular display of deep red, orange, yellow and gold. Tiny clusters of witch hazel-like ruby-red flowers on bare, grey-barked branches appear in February-March, making this tree a good bet for year round interest. It is tolerant of almost any conditions, including chalk, but will give its finest Autumn display in slightly acidic situations, and preferably sheltered from late Winter frosts.
Ultimate height 8m (26ft), Spread 5m (16ft).
