Tilia (Lime)

Tilia or Limes  are  a large group of about 30 species, mainly from the Northern Hemisphere. Mostly large trees between 20-40mtrs. They grow best on deep moist soil.  flowers are good sources of nectar to bees, although some species are said to be narcotic to bees, particularly Petiolaris and Tormentosa, but this is often contradicted by other sources.

We can supply the following varieties.

Tila Americana (American Linden)

This medium species is native to Central America, it’s large heart shaped leaves and fragrant flowers in June make it an attractive landscape tree.

Ultimate height  20m  (60ft),  Spread  10m  (35ft).

Tilia cordata (Small-leaved Lime)

This native species is a medium-sized deciduous tree with a spreading or rounded crown, and glossy dark green, heart-shaped leaves, turning yellow in autumn. Small, fragrant creamy-white flowers (suitable for bees) are borne in spreading clusters in summer, a  popular avenue tree.

Ultimate height  20m  (60ft),  Spread  10m  (35ft).

Tilia cordata Greenspire

A more upright growing small variety of the above species, more suitable where space is limited, can also be used for pollarding.

Ultimate height  10m  (32ft),  Spread  5m  (16ft).

Tilia Euchlora (Caucasian Lime)

Small to medium sized species, the heart shaped leaves are broadly toothed and are glossy green in colour, in mid summer clusters of scented flowers are followed by green fruit. Makes a good avenue tree as not affected by aphids so doesn’t produce Honeydew. We also sell this tree Pleached (see Pleached trees).

Ultimate height  15m  (48ft),  Spread  8m  (33ft).

Tilia europaea (Common Lime)

Large growing native species, once often planted as avenue trees in many stately homes, but suckers badly from base and burrs on the trunk. Heart shaped leaves dark green in colour, flowers mid-summer, very popular with bee keepers.

Ultimate height  20m  (60ft),  Spread  15m  (48ft).

Tilia eurpaea Pallida

An upright growing variety of the above species forming a pyramidal habit in maturity, with large ascending branches when young. large heart shaped mid-green leaves.

Ultimate height  15m  (48ft),  Spread  10m  (32ft).

Tilia henryana

A very beautiful rare, medium, slow growing species. Broad downy leaves up to 13cm long with conspicuous bristle like teeth which when unfolding are tinged cerise then bronze colour before turning green in mid summer. Fragrant creamy white flowers are produced in the autumn. suitable for the small garden.

Ultimate height  10m  (33ft),  Spread  6m  (19ft).

Tilia petiolaris (Silver Weeping Lime)

This tall, Medium tree has weeping branches rather than a weeping habit. The backs of its dark green leaves are fuzzy and white, turning the tree silver in a breeze. This is a tough tree with hanging clusters of small, pale yellow, fragrant flowers in summer. Supposedly narcotic to bees.

Ultimate height  20m  (65ft),  Spread  15m  (48ft).

Tilia platphyllos (Common Lime)

A vigorous growing tree which makes a large wide spreading tree in maturity. It has mid-green foliage which gives the tree a attractive appearance. , unlike other Limes it tends not to sucker too much. Like many Limes this tree has a lime yellow autumn colour and tends to lose its leaves early in the autumn period. It will tolerate most soil types, including clay soils.

Ultimate height  20m  (60ft),  Spread  15m  (48ft).

Tilia Platyphyllos Rubra (Red-Twigged Lime)

Variety of Platyphyllus with bright red young shoots, more upright when young but ultimately making the same sized tree.

Ultimate height  20m  (60ft),  Spread  15m  (48ft).

Tilia tomentosa (Silver Lime)

Large tree with broadly pyramidal crown and sturdy upward slanting branches. Dark green leaves are strikingly silvery-white beneath. Abundant aromatic yellowish-white flowers in mid-summer can have a narcotic effect on some bees. Thrives on most soils. Prefers full sun.

Ultimate height  20m  (60ft),  Spread  15m  (48ft).
