Platanus hispanica (London Plane)
A large and popular tree in the UK, with a high tolerance to pollution, gaining notoriety for its significant input into clearing up the smog laden air in London following the industrial revolution. Its large leaves are palmate and deeply lobed, starting green in the Spring, and turning to golden brown in the Autumn. Clusters of spiky fruit hang from stalks on the tree for most of the year. One of the most significant features of the London Plane is its peeling bark that flakes to reveal a patchwork of green, white and cream as it matures. Ultimately a very large tree that is best planted in a location where it has the space and time to grow to its maximum potential.
Ultimate height 30m (100ft), Spread 25m (82ft).
Platanus orientalis (Oriental Plane)
A large tree with a wide oval crown, becoming more rounded as the tree matures and older branches start to hang down. The palmate leaves usually have 5 – 7 serrated lobes and are deeply incised, emerging green in Spring and turning to golden brown in the Autumn. Clusters of spiky fruit hang from long stalks, at first green but turning to brown, and remaining on the tree until deep into the Winter. The Oriental Plane is tolerant of air pollution, and works well in large parklands and estates where it can grow to its maximum potential.
Ultimate height 30m (100ft), Spread 25m (82ft).
Platanus orientalis ‘Digitata’
A large tree with a wide oval crown, becoming more rounded as the tree matures and older branches start to hang down. The large ornamental leaves are deeply cut and dark green in colour with serrated edges, and these are accompanied by fluffy flowers in Spring. Summer brings clusters of spiky fruit hanging from long stalks, at first green but turning to brown, and these remain on the tree until deep into the Winter. Platanus orientalis ‘Digitata’ is ultimately a large tree, and is great for parkland planting, or as an architectural feature in a substantially sized garden.
Ultimate height 25m (82ft), Spread 20m (66ft).
